Okay so McCain is in the game with a win in NH and a re-surgence in the polls so the question is do you like his position on the issues and his record?
Well according to former Senator Rick Santorum:
“The bottom line is that I served 12 years with him, 6 years in the United States Senate as leader, one of the leaders of the Senate — the number-3 leader — who had the responsibility of trying to put together the conservative agenda, and almost at every turn on domestic policy, John McCain was not only against us, but leading the charge on the other side.” Kathryn Lopez's article continues with chapter and verse on examples of domestic and foreign problems with McCain. I have great respect for Santorum and value his opinion. What do you think of this?

Well, McCain's victory in NH has forced me to confront him as a viable candidate. I read the interview with Santorum that you posted, and it actually made me view John McCain more favorably. Whereas the author chastises Senator McCain for siding with Democrats, I thik it shows the ability to get along with others and to exercise independent judgment. No doubt this was frustrating to Senator Santorum as a party leader, but I find it admirable.
I also side with McCain regarding his skepticism of how we "interrogate" prisoners. This entire area deserves more scrutiny than Republicans have been willing to give it.
And immigration deserves less. Right wing demagogues have overplayed the threat that immigrants pose to us, and while I don't support open borders, I am skeptical of those who play on our fears of others. The issue is more complicated than the interview with Santorum suggests.
He has a pro-life voting record and received the support of Senator Sam Brownback when he bowed out. I think McCain deserves fair consideration, especially in a field of candidates, all of whom seem to have fatal flaws of their own.
Just to clarify you are comfortable with John McCain because of his pro-life record even though this is one of the areas he fought the GOP leadership on? I know you think fighting party bosses is a good think but when he is a maverick against the basis for your support, you are still open to him?
His stance on immigration or his opposition to tax cuts could be over looked -- but not his record on judges.
On the national level there is no more pressing issue then the proper appointment of judges and John McCain help lead the gang of 14 that held up good solid judges.
His fighting against the party on pro-life, pro-family bills behind the scenes tells me a lot about this man. Then for him to publicly create his own tribunal to vet judges who were "too conservative"?? I am sorry I lost a lot of respect for him over the years. That is to not even mention campaign finance reform.
I am not impressed by this maverick.
